There are a vast amount of laptops on the market currently, from a wide range of manufacturers such as Apple, Toshiba, Sony and IBM. The specs on each system often vary greatly, but one specification that should be considered highly important is the memory. The memory of your laptop computer is quite possibly the most element to consider when purchasing a new laptop (along with the processor speed and hard disk drive capacity). The question that is asked frequently is how much memory is enough? Well, to answer that, it depends on what your system will be used for. If you’re buying a laptop purely for web browsing, word processing or simply for e-mail, a laptop with a lower amount of memory will suffice - whereas if you’re buying a laptop for memory heavy work such as graphics, you’ll be better off with a higher spec system.
So, what does that mean in technical terms? As mentioned above, laptop memory comes in a variety of formats and sizes. The memory you will most likely see referenced RAM or random access memory. Typical RAM sizes for today’s laptops range from 1GB to 4GB. If you’re looking to do memory heavy processing on your notebook, you really ought to consider at least 4GB.
It is important to remember that a lot of laptops use a percentage of your overall system memory to power your graphics, so you will not get the full allocation purely for the programs and applications you’re currently running.
