Connectivity Options For Your Notebook

So, you’ve just bought your new notebook, or even better, received it as a Christmas present and want to get it online. What are your options? If you already have a PC at home, you can simply plug your current network cable into your new notebook or plug the modem in directly. You also have the option of purchasing a wireless router which will allow you to use your Internet connection around the home, but not much else. My personal favourite however is mobile broadband. With 99% of UK coverage, mobile broadband is quickly taking over. By taking out mobile broadband, you can use your new laptop anywhere you like and have Internet access at the same time. No more finding free wi-fi hotspots or plugging in the Cat 5 cable for you! Most mobile phone operators offer mobile broadband along with their mobile phone contracts, so finding a provider / deal should be relatively easy. This time of year there are always lots of broadband and mobile phone deals to be add, especially in January so have a look around and make sure you get an all inclusive bandwidth package as bandwidth can be particularly expensive on mobile if you’re not careful!

Mac or PC? The age old debate!

Posted on 21. Nov, 2008 by admin.

I have been a PC user for around the past 15 years, give or take. I literally use my computer for e-mail, spreadsheets a little bit of word processing and web development. Nothing too heavy, nothing out of the ordinary but my PC just can’t seem to handle it, more to the point, Windows Vista can’t. My laptop has the same problem and I, like millions of others, am growing increasingly tired of constant application crashes, poor usability and general speed issues. So, with that said, I am about to make the jump over to Apple. With my laptop anyway. There are so many laptop computers out there these days, all with a wide range of specs from a wide range of manufacturers, but one problem, they all run Vista. I think whatever system I buy, regardless of spec, I am going to run into issues. I have heard nothing put praise for Apple systems so I am going to make the switch. Let’s hope they really do make the best laptops! I have still not decided which system to go for, I am favouring the Macbook Pro but can’t decide whether to go for the 15″ or the 17″. A 17 laptop would be ideal for me but I wouldn’t fancy dragging it to the office every day. Let’s hope regardless of which one I go for, I don’t experience the regular crashes I am prone to currently!

Conference Calling Guide

As you may or may not know, conference calling is a telephone call involving 3 or more individuals. Conference calls are often used in business to connect 3 or more company representatives together so a three way (or more) conversation can take place as opposed to a standard two way phone conversation and then the details needing to be relayed and relayed to all parties. Not all conference call systems allow all parties to participate in the call, some systems only allow a two way conversation but multiple parties can listen in on the audio. To add parties to the conversation, the individuals simply need to call in or the conference call holder can in turn call each party and add them to the chat.

Companies wishing to make a conference call often turn to specialised service providers who handle the conference call on their behalf. The company will provide a phone number and pin code for the participants to dial into and access allowing all dialed in parties to communicate.

Third party conference call (bridging) services are extremely low cost when compared to installing such facilities in your own office building and as a result, many small, medium and large business are turning towards these providers.

After Sales Notebook Support

It has happened to many of us, you have just bought your new laptop / notebook computer, unboxed it all, booted it up and something has gone wrong. Now, for the technically competent, this sort of thing doesn’t pose too much of an issue. Those with the technical knowledge often know what to do to sort out the issues they are faced with, but, not everyone has this knowledge, no matter how small the issue is considered.

The laptop support lines, particularly in the United States are an extremely streamlined operation and they always know exactly what your issue is and 9 times out of 10, they can resolve your issue within seconds. This is mainly due to help desk outsourcing. All of the major corporations now outsource their help desk services to special, third party companies that are extremely highly trained in the product or service they are supporting. Not only that, they have a large level of customer liaison experience so they don’t just answer your technical query, they do it in a way that the information is conveyed clearly and in a non-condescending tone, despite how frustrated you may come across.

Next time you are using a computer / notebook help desk, make a note of the tone used by the operator, that’s all that training at work!

Common Laptop Memory Sizes

Posted on 14. Nov, 2008 by admin.

There are a vast amount of laptops on the market currently, from a wide range of manufacturers such as Apple, Toshiba, Sony and IBM. The specs on each system often vary greatly, but one specification that should be considered highly important is the memory. The memory of your laptop computer is quite possibly the most element to consider when purchasing a new laptop (along with the processor speed and hard disk drive capacity). The question that is asked frequently is how much memory is enough? Well, to answer that, it depends on what your system will be used for. If you’re buying a laptop purely for web browsing, word processing or simply for e-mail, a laptop with a lower amount of memory will suffice - whereas if you’re buying a laptop for memory heavy work such as graphics, you’ll be better off with a higher spec system.

So, what does that mean in technical terms? As mentioned above, laptop memory comes in a variety of formats and sizes. The memory you will most likely see referenced RAM or random access memory. Typical RAM sizes for today’s laptops range from 1GB to 4GB. If you’re looking to do memory heavy processing on your notebook, you really ought to consider at least 4GB.

It is important to remember that a lot of laptops use a percentage of your overall system memory to power your graphics, so you will not get the full allocation purely for the programs and applications you’re currently running.

With the fast paced life that we live nowadays, it seems like we rely almost half of our lives on technology - including our mobile phones, PDA’s, laptops, and computers. And if these gadgets crash for some reason, it would be devastating, since most of your files were stored in it.

Thankfully, there are now ways you could get your documents, photos, e-mails, and personal information back from you computer. With the use of the hard drive recovery, you may now stop feeling like it’s the end of the world, and you can begin to get your life back on track.

If your mail is important to you, then you may choose to try mail recovery instead. Mail recovery allows you to restore your lost or deleted files. Aside from that, it will also let you scan your e-mails and extract them from your inbox, so that it can be stored on your computer’s local drive.

On the other hand, if you have files that are a lot bigger, you may also recover these as well. Administrators or those who are in the IT business use RAID recovery to get their files back. It is actually quite inexpensive, contradictory to what some people might think. Raid recovery is performed by professionals who would immediately give solution to the problem, rather than aggravating it like other (non-professionals) do.

Hard-to-Find Electronic Components

Posted on 11. Sep, 2008 by admin.

I was working on a project that required the use of several electronic components. At first, I thought it was going to be an easy task to find everything that I was going to need in order to successfully complete my project. However, what I found was that the majority of the electronic components that I needed to make my project a success are now obsolete. What was I to do

My project has been designed to specifically use certain electronic components. If I do not find the electronic components that I need, I will be forced to abandon my project. This was just not an option. I had put too much time, money and energy in this project to just up and walk away from it. I had to do something, but where was I going to find obsolete semiconductors

I started in the first place any computer savvy individual would, the World Wide Web. I found all different kinds of electronic components. I even found a lot of semiconductors, but none of the electronic components I found would work in the equipment that I am using for my project. Therefore, I continued to look harder.

While I was at the local electronics store in my town, I was discussing my dilemma with the store clerk when a fellow customer in the store suggested I try the semiconductors catalog at NowComponents. I went straight online to check it out and found that they also have an excellent online electronic parts catalog as well.
